What it means for a hockey club to own its data
Short answer
Ownership means your club holds the matched tables in a database and accounts it controls, connected with its own provider keys and licences. You can export everything at any time and keep it if you switch tools or stop working with us — subject to each data source’s licence terms.
Vendor tools vs your own database
Most clubs pay for excellent point tools — league databases, tracking, video, athlete management — but the data lives inside each vendor’s product. That is fine until you need the same player across three systems, or you want a table in Power BI that outlives a contract renewal.
Owning your data means the harmonised outputs sit in infrastructure the club controls: a dedicated EU-hosted database, spreadsheets or dashboards in accounts the club owns, not ours.
Your keys, your licences
Every source is connected with the club’s own API keys, logins or export uploads under the club’s existing licence with that provider. The Hockey Brain processes and matches on your behalf; it does not buy data on your behalf or pool access across clubs.
Honest caveat: provider licence terms still apply. If a licence forbids redistribution or requires attribution, your club remains responsible for complying — we document source and field lineage in the data catalog so you can show where each column came from.
Export, Parquet and switching vendors
Tables can be exported (including Parquet or CSV) from the club’s database at any time. If you stop using a vendor, you keep what was already delivered; if you stop working with The Hockey Brain, you keep every table already landed in your accounts and we delete our working copies within 30 days after disconnect.
Frequently asked questions
Does our club really own the data?
Yes. It is stored in your club’s own database, connected with your own keys and licences. You can export everything at any time and keep it if you stop working with us.
What happens if we stop using a provider?
Historical tables already in your database stay yours. Future loads from that provider stop when you revoke access. The catalog shows which datasets depended on that source.
Can we still use the vendor’s own app?
Yes. The Hockey Brain sits underneath — it does not replace Elite Prospects, Sportlogiq, Hudl or your AMS. Staff can keep using those tools while matched tables flow to Power BI, Excel or Claude.
