A data catalog for hockey clubs

Short answer

A data catalog is the club’s inventory of datasets: where each table comes from, how fresh it is, which leagues and seasons it covers, known quality issues and lineage back to provider IDs. It answers “what do we actually have?” when staff change or when someone opens Power BI cold.

What the catalog contains

For each dataset the catalog records: human-readable name, source system (e.g. Sportlogiq, Elite Prospects, internal scouting sheet), refresh schedule, row counts or date ranges, leagues and seasons covered, quality flags (unmatched players, missing games, schema changes) and lineage to native provider IDs.

  • Dataset name and owner on the club side
  • Source and connection method (API vs CSV upload)
  • Freshness and last successful load
  • Coverage (leagues, seasons, teams)
  • Quality notes and open issues
  • Lineage to native IDs for audit

Example catalog row

Player season mart · Sources: Elite Prospects + Sportlogiq + scouting CSV · Updated weekly · Covers 2025/26 SHL roster · 2 unmatched junior call-ups flagged for review · Native IDs: EP-*, SLQ-* preserved.

Example data. Fictional dataset names and dates for illustration only.

Why it matters when staff change

Analytics teams turn over. A catalog prevents the new analyst from rebuilding tribal knowledge about which export is canonical, whether xG came from tracking or league feeds, and which sheet the sporting director trusts for scouting grades.

Frequently asked questions

What is a data catalog?

A list of every dataset you own: where it comes from, how fresh it is, which leagues and seasons it covers, and any quality issues.

Is the catalog a separate product?

No. It ships as part of the club’s database and documentation layer — the index of what The Hockey Brain maintains for you.

Who maintains it?

Loads and quality checks run on our side during the founding program; the club owns the catalog tables and can export them like any other dataset.
