Power play vs penalty kill explained

Short answer

The power play is the team with the extra skater trying to score; the penalty kill is the shorthanded team trying to prevent that goal. PP% and PK% are results rates — useful headlines that still need process context (chance quality, structure, clearances) before staff change a unit.

Two sides of the same whistle

A penalty creates a temporary manpower imbalance. The team with the extra skater runs a power play (PP). The team down a skater runs a penalty kill (PK). Staff shorthand — “PP1”, “PK2”, “how is our PK?” — always points back to that split.

Results rates get quoted first: power-play percentage (PP%) and penalty-kill percentage (PK%). Both answer “did we score / did we survive?” They do not answer “was the process repeatable?”

What coaches usually need

Coaches care whether the unit looks organized under pressure: entries and exits, faceoff plays, net-front coverage, and whether the same mistakes repeat after video. A cold PK% week can be variance; a week of failed clears and slot chances against is a practice plan.

  • PP: are controlled entries creating slot looks, or only perimeter volume?
  • PK: are clears and sticks breaking plays before high-danger chances form?
  • Both: do personnel choices match the matchup, not last week’s narrative?

What analysts and scouts usually need

Analysts pair the percentage with process metrics available in the club’s sources — expected goals on special teams when the tracking feed provides them, high-danger chances, shot shares while shorthanded or with the man advantage. Scouts watch habits: box structure, stick detail, scramble recovery.

When those signals live in separate exports (league box scores, tracking, video tags, a scouting sheet), comparing units across games becomes a join problem. The Hockey Brain’s job is not to invent a new special-teams model — it is to land the sources the club already pays for into one owned database with one player ID, so staff can open the same table in Power BI, Excel or Claude.

Frequently asked questions

What does PK mean compared with PP?

PP is the power play (extra skater, trying to score). PK is the penalty kill (shorthanded, trying to prevent a goal). See the glossary entry for PK meaning in hockey for the percentage definition.

Should we rank units only on PP% and PK%?

Use them as headlines, then check process: chance quality, structure and video. Small samples move the percentages quickly.

Can The Hockey Brain deliver special-teams tables today?

Not as a live connector. Special-teams columns come from the sources your club already licences once those Planned connectors ship with founding clubs. The free stack map shows which of your current tools can feed PP/PK questions.
