Shooting percentage is goals divided by shots on goal. Individual and on-ice shooting percentage swing wildly over small samples, which is why single-season hot or cold stretches often regress.
Pairing shooting percentage with expected goals shows whether a player is genuinely finishing above expectation or simply running hot.
