Can you trust AI answers about your club's hockey data?

Three simple rules that make AI answers about club data checkable, explained for coaches and staff.

The short answer

Yes, if three rules are in place: the AI can only read, and only the views the club chose; every answer shows the query behind it so an analyst can check it; and answers come from the club's own matched tables, not the internet.

Imagine a coach typing a question: which defencemen on our scouting list have the best zone exits this season? A few seconds later there is an answer.

That sounds great. But can the club trust it? AI tools can sound sure even when they are wrong. The good news is that a few simple rules make answers checkable.

Rule 1: The AI can only read

The AI should never be able to change or delete data. It gets read access only.

It should also only see the parts of the data the club has chosen. For example, game stats and scouting lists, but not medical notes. Less access means less risk.

Rule 2: Every answer shows how it was made

Behind each answer there should be a database query, usually written in SQL. The query should be visible.

That way an analyst can look at it and see exactly what was counted. Which games, which players, which season. If something looks off, it is easy to spot.

The coach does not need to read the query. It is enough that someone at the club can.

Rule 3: Answers come from the club's own data

The AI should answer from the club's own matched tables. Not from the internet and not from its memory.

This matters because data from different sources first has to be matched, so one player is one row. Without that, the AI may mix up two players with the same name, or count the same game twice.

What this looks like in practice

  • A coach asks a question in plain language
  • The AI turns it into a query against the club's tables
  • The answer comes back together with the query
  • The analyst checks it when it matters, for example before a signing

Staff get fast answers. The analyst keeps control.

What to watch out for

  • Treat answers as a starting point, not a final verdict
  • Check the query before big decisions
  • Keep sensitive data out of the views the AI can see

Where The Hockey Brain fits

An AI connection like this is planned for founding clubs in The Hockey Brain. It is not live yet. It would run on the club's own AI account, and we do not train on club data. Everything works just as well without AI, in Excel or Power BI.

Frequently asked questions

Is this available in The Hockey Brain today?

Not yet. An AI connection is planned for founding clubs. Everything also works without AI, in tools like Excel or Power BI.

Does the AI learn from our data?

In the planned setup the connection runs on the club's own AI account, and The Hockey Brain does not train on club data.

Tired of reconciling exports?

We are building maintained connectors for hockey data sources. Early clubs decide what ships first.
